The Clues to the Sky main quest in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom presents one of the most memorable riddles during the Zora region storyline. Solving this ancient mystery requires players to locate hidden figures, reach floating sky islands, and align environmental structures to unlock the path forward.
Locating King Dorephan in the Pristine Sanctum
To begin deciphering the ancient riddle, Link must first seek out King Dorephan to obtain the necessary King's Scales. The king hides within the Pristine Sanctum, a secluded cavern tucked behind a waterfall near Ploymus Mountain. Eavesdropping on children in the Zora throne room reveals the secret passage leading directly to his location.
Once inside the sanctuary, speaking with King Dorephan grants Link five scales required for the upcoming puzzle. These scales serve as key catalysts when combined with arrows during the trial. Equipping the Zora Armor before leaving simplifies movement across water obstacles.
Ascending to the Land of the Sky Fish
The next phase requires reaching Floating Scales Island, situated in the Lanayru Sky Archipelago above Mipha Court. Adventurers can ride fallen ruins skyward using the Recall ability or swim up waterfalls with restored Zora Armor. Taking advantage of nearby Zonai devices or hot-air balloons also offers a reliable ascent route.
Upon landing on the fish-shaped island, clear away scattered sludge using Splash Fruit or water abilities. Clearing the area allows players to move freely while searching for the key perspective angle. Standing near the central coordinates prepares Link for the visual alignment puzzle.
Solving the Teardrop Puzzle to Reveal the Pillar
Position yourself near the southwestern edge of Floating Scales Island to observe floating debris in the distance. When viewed from the correct angle, the scattered rocks line up to form a distinct teardrop shape. This visual alignment marks the exact target needed to progress the quest.
Draw your bow, attach a King's Scale to your arrow, and fire directly through the center of the rock teardrop. Successful shots trigger a bright pillar of light emerging from East Reservoir Lake. This light opens the pathway to the Ancient Zora Waterworks and advances the main story.
Preparing for the Ancient Zora Waterworks
After activating the light beam, return to Mipha Court to regroup with Prince Sidon. A brief encounter with a Sludge Like miniboss takes place before exploring the lake below. Defeating this enemy allows Link and Sidon to dive into the whirlpool toward the Water Temple.
